The MegaPhone Company was formed to work on a new generation of MegaPhone and PhonePro but for technical and legal reasons is unable to sell or support the older versions previously sold by Apple Computer, Cypress Research, Aveo, or Bing Software.

At MacWorld Expo in New York we announced the availability of beta release of MegaPhone v9.0. Unfortunately, Apple chose to eliminate voice record and playback functionality from the modems it builds into the new G4 iMacs (as well as the eMac, the new PowerBooks and iBooks, and the recently introduced PowerMacs). We are doing everything we can to lobby Apple to reverse its decision and/or offer a firmware upgrade to restore the functionality. In the meantime, we've begun working with vendors of external modems to produce an inexpensive external alternative.

So to get MegaPhone running on your G4 Mac you can pursue one of the following paths:

• (a) Continue using your older copy of MegaPhone with a USB-Serial adapter and an external serial modem such as the Best Data 56SPSX.
• (b) Switch to a new version of MegaPhone (when it ships) and use the G4 iMac internal modem but lose voice messaging features
• (c) Switch to a new version of MegaPhone (when it ships) and use a supported external USB modem with voice features
